Elders in Action Appoints New Executive Director
PORTLAND, OR — Elders in Action Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Leslie Foren has been appointed to serve as Executive Director effective June 1, 2012. Foren will transition from her current position of Director of Operations of Elders in Action (EiA), which she’s held since 2005, to lead the innovative nonprofit that serves older adults in the Tri-County area and continue the organization’s 44-year legacy of community building and advocacy.
“The vision and enthusiasm for the future of Elders in Action that Leslie shared with the hiring panel put her in a league of her own and made our decision simple. It is my goal to see this agency and its staff, volunteers, and the older adults we serve thrive and grow as we work to create an age-friendly community. I have no doubt we have found the right person for the job to ensure that Elders in Action does just that,” said EiA Board President Lynne de Vries.
Foren has a passion for serving older adults, demonstrated through over 18 years of personal and professional experience in the field, and has been with Elders in Action since 2001. She has extensive working knowledge and institutional memory of all agency programs and well-established relationships with community partners, staff, and volunteers. Foren is currently pursuing her MBA in Nonprofit Management and will graduate from the University of Portland next summer. This education, combined with her experience working in the field, will be invaluable to her new role as Executive Director.
“I am excited to have this opportunity as the next chapter of my career, to work with our committed and energetic staff, and to help take this unique organization to the next level,” said Foren. “Serving the older adult population has always been my passion, and I look forward to the future with our great volunteers, staff, and community partners.”
Vicki Hersen, the former Executive Director, retired from Elders in Action after 14 years of service at the end of April. Hersen successfully led EiA for 7 years, and wholeheartedly endorsed Foren as her successor. “After working with Leslie for 11 years, I know she is the perfect person to lead Elders in Action. Her leadership, skills, and expertise will be vital to meeting the increasing needs of our aging community.”
Through a unique model that blends personal and public advocacy, Elders in Action serves the 60+ population with proven programs in areas such as housing, healthcare, and fraud and abuse prevention. EiA is powered by the experience of more than 150 volunteers and seven staff members who work to assure a vibrant community through the active involvement of older adults.
