The South Tabor Neighborhood Association is made up of resident volunteers who work tirelessly to improve livability within our boundaries. Board members dedicate hours of time each month to ensure information is shared, safety is addressed and activities benefiting the community are implemented.

There are many exciting things happening in South Tabor right now, and we're looking to grow our work committees, so that neighborhood projects and activities can be successfully completed. We need volunteers to help with many of the tasks, below:

--Creation and management of a hard-copy and electronic newsletter

--Construction of neighborhood kiosks/bulletins to share information

--Development and coordination of fundraising activities

The first annual South Tabor neighborhood Garden Walk was a huge success! In spite of the extremely hot weather, neighbors turned out in droves. Add the garden walk to your calendar next year, probably earlier in the summer. Details coming soon.

Summer is off to a great start! South Tabor is excited about all of the upcoming events around the neighborhood. The next exciting event is the South Tabor Garden Walk. on August 4th from 10 to 2. The Garden Walk will give neighbors a chance to tour gardens, gather ideas, and make friends.

STNA is also looking forward to this year's Movie in the Park, scheduled for August 18th at Warner Pacific College. Live music begins at 6:30 and the movie "Akeelah and the Bee" at dusk.

Garden Exchange Gains Interest, Momentum

A neighbor-to-neighbor garden exchange table has been set up in the driveway between 63rd and 64th and Franklin. It was quite active during the transplanting season, but has since tapered off with warmer weather. Jana Thockmorton is leading this effort and is hoping to connect with neighbors who refrain from using chemicals, and who desire to share not only plants and seeds, but also the bounty that harvest season brings.

Thockmorton says, "I've met so many neighbors and am growing some wonderful things in my garden this year from many of you! So many neighbors come by and say...what is that? Could I get a start, or a seed? And of course the answer is always--YES!!"

The goal of the South Tabor Walking Group is to meet neighbors while getting a healthy dose of exercise. An added bonus? You'll have an opportunity to talk with a personal trainer and lifestyle/weight management coach while you walk! Here are the details:

What: A chance to connect with neighbors and find walking buddies

In November Blythe Pavlik, a SE Uplift staff member, lead the first of a two part visioning session for the purpose of brainstorming about how to create a more vital neighborhood association. A second session will be held on January 19th at 7 to 9 pm in a meeting room at Trinity Fellowship, 2700 SE 67th. Everyone living in South Tabor is invited to attend and share ideas. Snacks and childcare will be provided.

At the first session, neighbors were asked to respond to the question: What is your vision of a vibrant neighborhood? More than 20 ideas were listed including - a vibrant neighborhood association fosters relationships, builds pride, shares information, reaches out to include everyone, is interested in sustainability, and enthusiastic about neighborhood history.

July brought parades, fireworks and unpredictable weather. Farmers' markets are in full swing, including a new one at Cafe au Play on SE Division and 57th.

Sadly we recently lost Gigi's Coffee Bar on SE 60th and Division, but happily Rain or Shine Coffee has taken its place. Welcome to the neighborhood.

At the July STNA meeting a neighbor suggested we sponsor a South Tabor Garden Walk next summer. It was met with enthusiasm and Margaret Jeppesen was appointed chair.

Fliers for the "Movie in the Park" will go out the first week of August. The date for "How To Train Your Dragon" is August 20th.

We are hoping for sunny days soon in the South Tabor neighborhood.

After 40 years of complaints, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will be sponsoring a community review of safety issues on SE Division from 11th to the city limits. Division has been designated a High Crash Corridor because of the number of vehicle and pedestrian accidents. Public input will be gathered in 2012 and recommendations made.

STNA has a new president! We welcome MaryLouise Ott, elected unanimously to a two year term. In a celebratory atmosphere, outgoing president Jonah Paisner was presented with a gift certificate in appreciation for his four years of service. Cake and ice cream was served.

Our Neighborhood Clean Up was a success. Led by coordinator Kim Hogan, volunteer coordinator Sandra Hay-Magdaleno, and Jana Throckmorton, 50 volunteers collected yard debris, metal, plastic, mixed waste, and reusable items from 100 cars & trucks passing through the lot at Trinity Fellowship on Saturday, May 28th.

Sarah Figliozzi of the PBOT 50s Bikeway Project presented an update on progress over the last few months. The latest design concept was endorsed by STNA.

Speakers from Friends of Portland Community Gardens announced that following the adoption of a new master plan for the Mt. Tabor Nursery, a 15,000 square foot community garden will open at the east end of Lincoln by the entrance to the park. Funds are being raised for a tool shed, fencing and bike parking. STNA has voted to write a letter in support of this newest garden and help with fundraising.

Neighbors are invited to participate in our annual Neighborhood Cleanup on Saturday, May 28th. For more details look for the ad in the SE Examiner. Put this event on your agenda now and consider volunteering.

STNA voted to support a letter submitted to the Portland City Council by MTNA, Arlington Heights, Sierra Club, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, Friends of the Reservoirs, and others regarding Water Bureau plans to increase water bill costs.

We are excited to announce that "How To Train Your Dragon" will be the featured "Movie in the Park" hosted by Warner Pacific College and co-sponsored by STNA, MTNA, Friends of Mt. Tabor Park, and Portland Parks and Recreation. Mark your calendars for August 20th. Local bands will open the evening.

In response to Franklin High School Class of 2011's request for sponsorship of the upcoming senior (alcohol free) all night party, STNA voted unanimously to sponsor two graduating seniors.

We are happy to welcome Kim Hogan as this year's neighborhood clean-up coordinator. She will be assisted by board members Marika Feibel, Sandra Hay-Magdaleno, and Ute Munger. Stay tuned for more information or join us, share your skills, and help make this event a success.

STNA has partnered with MTNA, Friends of Mt. Tabor Park, and Portland Parks and Recreation to accept a gracious offer from Warner Pacific College to host a summer Movie in the Park at their outdoor amphitheater. Mark your calendars for August 20th.

The new year has started off on a good note! Officer Brent Maxey of the East Precinct reported a decrease in the number of crimes in our neighborhood, which consisted predominantly of car prowls, especially along Powell Boulevard. To prevent larcenies and theft, take an additional minute to remove items from the cabin when leaving your car, and park it in a well-lit location. Besides remembering to remove all electronic devices, if you have a GPS unit, use wipes to clean off the ring left on the windshield at the attachment site.

Turn In Your Unused Prescription Medications!

The Office of Neighborhood Involvement’s Crime Prevention Program will partner with the Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct at Fred Meyer, 7404 N Interstate Ave, on Saturday March 13, 2010, from the hours of 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to take back your unused prescription medications. The Mobile Precinct will be located at the East end of the parking lot and staffed by crime prevention coordinators and police officers for the anonymous turn in of unused prescription drugs.
